As you may have heard, we are putting a crew together on our boat, O Desiderata, a Beneteau First 38.5, to aid in cancer research. The crew will sail the boat during the same weekend as The Ride to Conquer Cancer (June 18 to 19, 2011), from her berth in Point Roberts, WA to Bell Harbour Marina in downtown Seattle.

In October, 2008, my Partner Patrick's little boy, Finn, passed away from a rare form of cancer. Since then, Patrick, his wife Sam, first their friends, and then eventually more than 100 people (I am something like # 98 on the Team) formed "Team Finn". Team Finn is now the largest team that participates locally in The Ride to Conquer Cancer. Last year, Team Finn raised something like $550,000 for cancer research, particularly research related to pediatrics.

Team Finn's aim is to raise the funds necessary to map certain genes that cause cancer in kids.

Patrick had been trying to get me and my other Partner Bob Taylor (who also owns O Desiderata) on a bike to do the Ride for a couple of years now. Instead, we eventually hit on the idea that while the bikers were biking on the weekend of June 18, we would sail to Seattle. Everyone on the crew would be tasked to raise some money. Also, we would raise some more funds as a crew by way of corporate fundraising -- we are going to commission a spinaker (the big kite sail that is flown from the foredeck) with Team Finn and other corporate logos, and raise the spinnaker on the downwind run to Seattle.

We also expect there will be some (hopefully lots) of media.

Between now and June, we will be training a little bit on the Boat i.e. sailing the boat; and getting the sail made and doing our fundraising.

We think it will be a lot of fun, but we need your support.
