5th Annual Sobriety Walk for Cancer

The Sobriety Walk for Cancer event was created by my father, Spruce Wamiss, our chief Helagalis, and myself, Thomas/Thomasina Wamiss. My father not only heard my ideas before they came to life, but he supported all my ideas for SW4C from the start, he wrote the first speech in both our language and English on his own. Devastatingly dad passed away 6 months after the completion of the 1st Annual. This making every SW4C journey dedicated to honor his name.

The SW4C's journey over the past three years would not have been possible without the generous support provided by Applewood Car Dealership, Port Hardy Bulldozing, Quatsino First Nations Health, and Reaper Killer Design. I would like to formally acknowledge Becki Stone for her valuable time and creative contributions in designing the posters, which have played an essential role in promoting awareness of the SW4C event from its creation.

The time from the launch of the 1st Annual to the finish line of the 4th Annual Sobriety Walk for Cancer (SW4C) spanned 2 years, 11 months, and 25 days. Now this is the event page for the 5th Annual SW4C. There have been many adversities faced that had potential to stop each journey from being successfully completed. Despite these challenges, each obstacle became a lesson in resilience and a testament to the purpose behind every step taken. As I prepare for the 5th Annual SW4C, I carry not only the spirit of my father and our communities but also the unwavering determination that has emerged through hardship. Every setback has reinforced my commitment to this cause, reminding me that the journey is as important as the destination, and that perseverance in the face of adversity honours the memory and legacy of those I walk for.

All four of the SW4C have raised $7,005 for cancer research, and the goal has been set to raise $10,000 for the 5th Annual SW4C.
