Vancouver home to new nuclear medicine hub

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced $10.23 million in federal funding to build the Institute for Advanced Medical Isotopes (IAMI), a new nuclear medicine hub. The facility  the first-of-its-kind in Canada  will be part of TRIUMF (Canada’s particle accelerator centre) located at the University of British Columbia campus.

A recent $18.346 million gift made by an anonymous individual to the BC Cancer Foundation will help support the IAMI facility and the BC Cancer lab that it will house, where researchers will advance the development of highly targeted radionuclide therapy for metastatic cancers.

BC Cancer researcher receives prestigious award

Dr. Christian Steidl, research director of the Centre for Lymphoid Cancer and senior scientist at BC Cancer, is the first Canadian scientist to receive an Allen Distinguished Investigator Award, ranking among the most celebrated scientists in North America.

The esteemed award comes with $1.5 million in research support from The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group, a division of the Allen Institute, established by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen, who passed away October 15 from a complication related to his recent relapse of lymphoma.

Inspiring act to help others

For the past 21 years, 62-year-old Gia has been collecting recyclables and donating the proceeds from her returns to the BC Cancer Foundation.

Almost every weekday, she makes the long trek to the Foundation office with a smile and a donation, usually no more than $10 at a time.

Her tireless efforts over the two decades have added up to close to $15,000 in total, proving every donation - no matter the amount - can help bring hope to families impacted by cancer.
