Incredible $620,000 Raised for Immunotherapy Research on Vancouver Island

On December 5th, Vancouver Island supporters came together at the 7th annual Jingle Mingle and Jingle Soirée, raising $620,000 for Dr. Brad Nelson's immunotherapy research initiative.
300 guests attended the event at Victoria's landmark Fairmont Empress Hotel. A highlight of the evening was the announcement of a $100,000 gift from long-time BC Cancer Foundation supporter Jo Campbell.
Funds raised will help to shape the future of cancer care by supporting immunotherapy clinical trials and uncovering more effective treatment options for individuals facing cancer. Read more.

Congratulations to BC Cancer Agency Clinician Researcher Award Recipients!
Dr. Kim Chi and Dr. David W. Scott are the recipients of the BC Cancer Agency Clinician Researcher awards. As a public health care institute with a commitment to excellence, the BC Cancer Agency seeks to continually improve outcomes for patients. Clinician Researchers are directly engaged in both patient care and research, and thus play a critical role in achieving this mandate and are well-positioned to serve as bridges between the research lab and the clinic.
Selected by their peers from a high calibre of applicants, Dr. Chi and Dr. Scott were awarded a cumulative $1.5 million over five years. The award is funded by BC Cancer Foundation donors. Dr. Chi's project will focus on translational research in prostate cancer, while Dr. Scott will further investigate treatment failure in B cell lymphoid cancers.

Monthly Donors Making a Big Impact
Monthly donors are at the heart of the BC Cancer Foundation’s ability to provide a reliable and sustainable stream of funding to support the BC Cancer Agency’s world-class research.
Because we can count on contributions every month, we can invest directly in the work of the BC Cancer Agency’s renowned research team in the most effective way.
Each month, over 6,500 BC Cancer Foundation donors give an average of $20 per month, and provide over $1.5 million dollars annually to sustain the momentum of research progress here in B.C.
We invite you to start 2014 by joining us as a monthly donor. Your monthly gift will make a big impact for cancer research. Find out more about monthly giving and sign up here.

Introducing January Guest Blogger Dr. Brian Toyota

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Brian Toyota back to the blog for January.
Dr. Toyota is the Provincial Chair of Neuro-Oncology at the BC Cancer Agency and first blogged for us in December 2011. We look forward to hearing from him about the latest innovations in brain cancer treatment and care.

Fitness Tips for the New Year!

January is the perfect time to get back in shape (and train for Workout to Conquer Cancer)!
Here are a few ways to change up your exercise routine and get fit:
If walking is your exercise of choice, try mixing things up by taking a new route;
At the gym, use free weights instead of weight machines for resistance training;
Alternate high-impact aerobics with a boot camp or spin class;
Get some fresh air with a bike ride or hike in the great outdoors;
Focus on your breathing and clear your mind with pilates, yoga or tai chi.
*And here's an interesting tip: experts say the best time of day to work out is when your body temperature is at its highest - for most of us, this tends to be in the late afternoon. Muscles will be warmer, reaction time quicker and strength at its peak!
