This February, I’ve committed to Lose the Booze and give up alcohol for the entire month in order to raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation.
Statistics say that one in two people in BC will be affected by cancer in their lifetime. Those statistics became a reality for me on February 20, 2017 when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. I've experienced the effects of cancer up close and personal, and witnessed the effects on myself and my loved ones first hand. Weeks after my diagnosis, another shipmate of mine from HMCS CALGARY was diagnosed with cancer. Once again, weeks later, a third shipmate was diagnosed. This disease has affected us all differently and we all have a different story to tell. No matter how long or short our story is, we've all be affected by this disease and owe our successes and lives to the BC Cancer Agency.
Almost a year after my initial diagnosis I've decided to show my gratitude to the BC Cancer Agency by creating the team "Onward" for their fundraising event "Lose the Booze". Some people may argue that I am not challenging myself by running long distances or biking across Canada, but I am making a difference, a difference that is worth supporting. Alcohol consumption is linked to increased risk of cancer, especially in men. Not only is supporting "Lose the Booze" a healthy lifestyle choice, the money collected goes directly to the BC Cancer Foundation. Your donations and support will help to save the lives and ease the pain of people affected by this silent yet terrible disease.
It’s going to be a long month, and I’m relying on the support of friends and family like you to see me all the way through February 28th.
Please, will you support me with a donation today? Your gift will directly support life-saving cancer research taking place at BC Cancer – and will play a huge role in keeping me motivated this month.
Thank you so much for your support!
