Welcome to my webpage!
Well, it is year four of my participation at the Workout to Conquer Cancer and many things have happened. For starters, this year, I don’t have to workout for an entire day, but the challenge is to exercise once a day for the entire month of May. That’s 31 days of exercising, any workout(s) of my choosing to raise awareness and funds for the BC Cancer Foundation and Cancer Research.
This past year has been probably one of the most difficult ones I’ve had to face in my entire life thus far. We had lost a family friend, Mrs. Wong, followed by three of my former colleagues, and most heartbreaking of all, my mom was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in October. Unfortunately, it is one of the most difficult cancers to detect until it is far too advanced, as was the case for mom. Although mom couldn’t do much of anything to fight it, we as a family, appreciated the support, kindness and attention provided to us by the staff at the BC Cancer Agency while we tried to cope and keep mom as comfortable as possible during her final month and a half.
Thankfully, my message is not entirely somber. Last year, I had mentioned a Chinese international student who was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia. Well, she immediately went through all her endless rounds of Chemotherapy and in the latter part of last year, doctors found a match for a bone marrow donor. In January of this year, this now, 19 year old student, was given a second chance with a successful bone marrow transplant. All she wants to do is start her post secondary education and explore as much of Vancouver during her stay here, and eventually the world! Our Cancer Agency has many aspects and moving parts to it, and with it, comes sad stories as well as joyous ones. I hope in the near future, we can all have more hopeful and uplifting stories to share such as this one.
In memory of my friends and colleagues, I will commit to this year’s new challenge. (Let me know if anyone needs a workout partner...) I will also be giving up coffee during this time as I had done so last year – Matcha Lattes, here I come. Furthermore, I will continue to workout for another fourteen days, in memory of my loving mom who would be turning 80 years young on June 14th.
