Journey home pic

One day after completing the inaugural Ride to Conquer Cancer from Vancouver to Seattle, a group of riders will embark on the "Journey Home" from Seattle. On Monday, June 22nd 2009 they will retrace their steps from the previous two days of cycling, with the objective of completing the return trek to Vancouver in one day.

The team, led by Wedgewood Hotel & Spa General Manager Philip Meyer and former professional cyclist and Olympic medallist, Axel Merckx, will be riding in support of their friend SINDI HAWKINS. Sindi recently retired after serving the province and the public for 13 years as MLA for Kelowna-Mission. Since her own leukemia diagnosis in 2004, she has been a tireless supporter of the cancer cause. As co-chair of the BC Cancer Foundation’s Tour of Courage in 2007, as founder of her own annual Sindi Hawkins & Friends Charitable Golf Tournament, and with a new endowment fund, Sindi has helped raise nearly $3 million for the BC Cancer Foundation.

Sindi is currently battling leukemia for a third time. The Team know Sindi as not only a cancer survivor, but, as Lance Armstrong has said, a cancer ‘thriver.' They are undertaking the Journey Home to honour the contributions Sindi has made in making a difference for those affected by cancer and to acknowledge the challenges she faces in her current battle with the disease.

Joining Philip and Axel on the Journey Home team are Axel's wife, Jodi, a former professional triathlete; Vancouver businessmen David Cohen, Chairman and CEO of Gold Wheaton and Damon Williams, President of Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management; and Wedgewood Cycling Team members John Litherland, owner of Events On-line and Michael Sileika, a Senior Manager with Deloitte &Touche. The riders will be supported by a crew of Wedgewood Cycling Team members.

Please support the Team with a generous donation. All funds raised will be directed to the SINDI HAWKINS AND FRIENDS EDUCATION ENDOWMENT and will help create a World Free from Cancer.

Did a hard ride yesterday in Team Merckx kit in support of Sindi's treatment. Trying to match her efforts. Not possible.

Philip
I am amazed at what you and your friends are doing cycling back from Seattle - I'm not even sure I am going to make it there!
But you are doing it for an amazing person and I know she will be honoured by your decision to do this.
Have a safe joirney back and thanks so much for the chance to donate to Sindi's Fund.
Best regards
Nick

Philip and Axel
Thanks for doing this. Of course finding a cure for cancer is a great cause but so too is recognizing the tireless and inspirational efforts of our friend Sindi. I spent some time with her on the phone yesterday and I am truely in awe of her strength as I know you are. Ride safely.
Jess
