Kilby Gibson Endowment Fund for Lymphoid Cancer Research

Kilby Gibson was a memorable and much loved Vancouverite. She was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin mantle cell lymphoma in April, 2002 at age 55, looking fine but with white cell counts near lethal levels. After some months of interim treatment at the BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) she was given an autologous bone marrow stem cell transplant in early 2003 (a relatively new procedure in B.C. at the time) and enjoyed five and one-half full years of complete remission and robust good health. So the disease can be held at bay.

But it came back, all the options in the toolkit failed this time, and she passed away a little under a year later. We cannot yet defeat lymphoma, but the care and comforting of people at the BCCA is superb, and except for the last two weeks, her last months held much happiness.

To our family, victory over this terrible thing looks just over the horizon. It wasn't soon enough to save our beloved Kilby, but with focused research that will come. We are doing what we can to help, and are extremely grateful to the researchers and donors who will make this happen.

About Lymphoid Cancers

To honour the life of Kilby Gibson, the BC Cancer Foundation has created a perpetual endowment fund bearing her name. Interest earned from this fund will be dedicated to advancing the study of lymphoid cancers. This fund will enhance the BC Cancer Agency’s ability to understand the multitude of mechanisms that cause lymphoid cancers and will enable the development of new and more effective treatments for the many individuals diagnosed with a lymphoid cancer.

The incidence of this group of cancers is rising faster than any other common cancer seen in North America and in fact, has been doubling every 20 years for more than 70 years. Today, lymphoid cancers are the fourth most common cancers diagnosed in both men and women.
