I learned that life is precious and I am thankful for every day I am not looking out the window of a hospital room. I learned that being alive means: waiting in line, be there for my parents, getting caught in traffic, dropping & breaking something, having fun doing something for myself, and these events are all part of being alive, surviving, and kicking aside anything that is negative, including cancer!
I formed “Geminis Dream Team" in record time, and my all-female sailing team of strong women set sail away from cancer, and planned to raise funds in support of the BC Cancer Foundation!
Alas, we found ourselves turning back, due to a mechanical failure of our a section of the mast...it was not to be that we reached a paradise....but paradise was still sailing on the open ocean, heading back home, with the many colors of ribbons still there on the stern of the boat as reminders of the very brave...
Me & my “Dream Team” had set a fundraising goal of $10,000 – with 100% of the funds raised going directly to BC Cancer, allowing the amazing research teams to continue working towards curing cancer...thus ending the physical and emotional devastation it causes.
And I continue to work on my goal as I am more than half way there and am determined to meet my goal!
I was the Skipper of my amazing Dream Team, and here is my story
“Three years ago, I was given a second chance at life, as my rare and aggressive ovarian cancer was confronted by the oncological superstars Dr. Dianne Miller & Dr. Jessica McAlpine, doctors specializing in the clear cell type of cancer that I am lucky enough to have run from....it is their skills, (and my own luck!)...that I give thanks for, every single day.
When I was first told I might have a year to live, one of my first thoughts was "and I have not even sailed to Hawaii yet"!
As a sailor, the Vic-Maui international yacht race has always been a dream of mine, and even though I have not yet completed this goal (I have 1/2 of it under my belt!) I still have the goal of raising funds for those who help us in the fight, every day...
My goal was to raise funds to reach my goal of $10,000...and I will continue to raise funds, even though the race is over!
I also volunteer at the BC Cancer Agency to give back some of the strength I am again so lucky to have, so those facing what I have faced, know that there are those of us who will be there for them, as I truly know what they are going through (let me show you my radiation tattoos & maybe even my giant scar!).
Seeing the dedicated staff and volunteers who work so hard in the fight to end cancer, and always remembering that I was one of those being helped by them, I decided I wanted to help with the funds that are needed for these battles.
I want to share my strength to help those who need it, (maybe a friend, family, someone I do not know, or even you)…as I truly believe that, due to luck, dedication and the strong wills of many, I am still here to help those who may be weary..."
Please know your gift of any size is appreciated and will always be part of making a huge difference in the work the amazing researchers are doing as they work towards giving us the power to stop cancer. As a donor, you will also have a direct impact towards improvements to the care provided to cancer patients in B.C.
(an income tax receipt for the full amount of your donation will be sent to you!)
