JULY 2011

Summertime Inspiration!

This update is going to be unique with me sharing some of our successful experiences over the past month. It’s been inspiring for us to reach new milestones.

In early June, we completed our Inspire the World campaign, raising over $10-million to fund a major construction and renovation project at the BC Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island Centre. The renovation will include a state-of-the-art Patient & Family Support Centre, a Predictive Cancer Research Centre, and a Radiation Innovation Wing.

A huge thank-you to every one of the 2,978 riders who participated in our third annual Ride to Conquer Cancer on June 18th and 19th, raising $11.1 million in support of the BC Cancer Agency! This event has made many research breakthroughs possible, and I invite you to read about some examples of the work your dollars and efforts support here.

On June 21st, in co-operation with the Vancouver Board of Trade, we celebrated our inaugural Discovery Day, to celebrate the many world-first research breakthroughs at the BC Cancer Agency. Two Agency Doctors and Researchers shared their research discovery moments, a cancer survivor told her inspiring story, as did a generous donor. The lunch concluded with Vancouver City Councillor Heather Deal officially proclaiming Discovery Day; here is a picture of us posing with the proclamation.

Later that same week, we presented our 2011 Annual Report to Donors to our Board of Directors. I invite you to visit the website, www.partnersindiscovery.ca, and view a message from our partners in discovery. Our Financial Summary is also available there.

And just yesterday, Genome British Columbia and the BC Cancer Foundation joined forces to announce a major step forward in personalized medicine. The BC Cancer Agency Genome Sciences Centre will harness the power of genomics to help tailor individual treatments for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. You can read the full announcement here.

It really has been a big month for us, and now we welcome July and summertime. Below is a reminder of next month’s Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women’s Cancers™ and to the side are a few other updates for you.

Once again, as our partner in discovery, thank you for your continued and generous support!

Sincerely,

Doug Nelson Signature
