ALLAN, David StewartM.D., F.R.C.S.(C) Passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in Paris, France on March 29, 2010, while vacationing with his family. David was born in Vancouver on April 8, 1943, to Grace and Donald Allan. When only twelve years old, he decided to pursue medicine as his career. He graduated from UBC in 1969 and interned at VGH, where he met and married Melanie Bishop. Three children followed: Karen, Sandra and Donald. In 1973, David joined the staff at Royal Columbian Hospital and developed a busy practice in obstetrics and gynaecology, from which he never completely retired. He was instrumental in establishing the Colposcopy Clinic at RCH, which continues to play an important role in BC's renowned cervical cancer screening program. David worked tirelessly to promote quality patient care; he served as President of the RCH and ERH Medical Staff, he was Chief of Surgery, chaired the Surgical Bed Allocation and Utilization Committee, and founded the D. A. Boyes Society. David was a larger than life character, whose life was filled with many passionate interests. He was never idle, whether gardening, reading, planning travel itineraries or dinner party menus, or writing his famous daily travel blogs. He was an accomplished cook, amassing a collection of over 1,000 cookbooks; soups and Italian cuisine were specialties. Over more than 30 years, David was known for his wine making, judging, and educating almost as much as for medicine. He held countless wine tasting seminars at his home, and organized dozens of wine tours; Dave's Tours travelled to California, Oregon, Washington, and to his favourite area, the Okanagan. The May tour to Lodi will go ahead, as a posthumous tribute. Above all else, David loved his wife and children. He adored his six year-old granddaughter, Sarah, with whom he spent endless happy hours. He was unstintingly loyal and supportive and leaves to them a legacy of love and strength. Family and friends are deeply saddened by this enormous loss, but may find comfort and inspiration in this comment taken from one of David's emails: While we have some health left, we should just go ahead and do things that give us pleasure. Tuum Est! (DSA, 2009) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BC Cancer Foundation.
