Beat the Crap Out of Cancer XVI
On Sunday, November 9th, my school Academie Duello, together with Maelstrom Martial Arts, will host Beat the Crap Out of Cancer, a day where martial artists from across schools and styles come together not as competitors, but as allies, to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.
This year, I’m honoured to be fighting alongside Haley’s Honour Guard, a team created by my student, Jeremy, in memory of his daughter Haley, who passed away from cancer in 2023 at the age of 20.
Jeremy came to Academie Duello seeking a place of peace and focus during his family’s battle with cancer. What he found was a community that stood by him when he needed it most. Out of that connection, Haley’s Honour Guard was born: a group of friends and swordfighters who honour Haley’s memory through action, compassion, and purpose.
Haley’s Honour Guard first took the field just days after her passing, raising over $10,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation. Each year since, the team has continued her legacy, fighting not only with swords but with heart.
I’m proud to join them in fundraising again this year, to fight in Haley’s name and to help BC Cancer continue its vital work: funding research, advancing treatment, and offering care and hope to families like Jeremy’s and Haley’s.
Every dollar raised brings us closer to a future where fewer families have to face what theirs did.
Please consider making a donation and helping us beat the crap out of cancer.
