Avtar Virdi's Cross-Canada Walk for BC Cancer
Why this fundraiser?
I with my family moved to Canada in Jan 2004 and established myself with my family very successfully. I do lots of things to make money like Life Insurance, Certified Translation, a TV show on Vision and Joy TV, but I am overall a successful teacher. I have never abused my body with smoking or any type of drug. I drank only 8 to 10 times in the company of my very close friends since I came to Canada. Shockingly, I suffered from cancer in Jan 2017 and I had to go through Chemo and radiation therapies, a great deal of pains. I was declared Cancer-free in May 2021.
Very unfortunately, cancer came back in Oct 2020 and rotted my liver. It is said that cancer comes with vengeance 2nd time, and the same happened to me. I had to go through 12 cycles of Chemotherapy and 25 radiation treatments in 2021-22. A liver surgery was performed on May 10, 2021 and 30% of my liver was removed. Terrible pains!
As I have been helping people prepare for Citizenship exam for the last 12 years, and I am greatly inspired by the life history of Terry Fox who raised over a million dollars in 1980 for cancer research. I feel I survived even 2nd time from cancer due to Terry Fox’s great initiative and research in curing cancer. I also feel if Terry Fox, an 18-year-old at that time, had such a high thinking to spread awareness about cancer and raise so much money for cancer research, I should also follow him and try to do the same if possible.
I very humbly request every one to donate generously so cancer could be eliminated from society.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my initiative, and considering a donation to research and care at BC Cancer.

About myself:
I with my family moved to Canada on PR basis from India in Jan 2004. I moved here with the intension of opening my own institute GTP Marvelous College Inc. (www.EnglishIsVeryEasy.com) for teaching how to speak English. My wife and I opened it in Surrey in 2008 and achieved great success.
The same institute was founded in 1992 at Kapurthala city of Punjab. My wife and I worked so hard that our institute became a household name in the North-West Punjab, India just in two years.
In 1998, the institute was recognized by the ‘Overseas Employment Cell’ of Punjab Government, and we were the first to get this government recognition. Our institute launched its first book ‘Marvelous English Speaking Course’ authored by myself in sept 1996, which proved to be a great success. The popularity of this book made our institute much more famous and we grew to new heights by leaps and bounds. After helping over 50,000 students in India, we planned to move our center of operation to Canada.
Eventually, we immigrated to Surrey, Canada in 2004, but we realized that it was a daunting task to re-establish our institute here as government was providing free ESL classes. However, our commitment to society and teaching skills were so good that we succeeded again in Canada. Soon, this college became very popular in Canada. Our books began selling like hot cakes. I never looked back. I wrote seven more books on English including one Punjabi novel and its English version that took our popularity to further new heights. Punjabi University, Patiala, India honored me for my Punjabi novel. Several students have done their Ph.D. on my novel.
My wife and I bought a slot on Vision TV, a Canadian national TV channel, in April 2015 and started giving free tips for learning English and Canadian Citizenship exam. We achieved further new heights. At present, we have one of the well-established institutes of British Columbia, Canada, for helping people learn English speaking, prepare for IELTS, CELPIP, CLB, Canadian Citizenship and various English challenge exams.
I am so happy that my family supported me so well to come out of this ordeal twice.
