SUPPORTING RESEARCH AND CARE AT BC CANCER

John Bingham, Architect AIBC, RIBA, passed away in Vancouver on December 27, 2021, at the age of 74.
John was born in Liverpool, and emigrated to Perth, Australia with his family at two years old. He completed his Bachelors Degree in Architecture from the University of Western Australia in 1969 and worked for John & Crystal until 1971, at which time he moved to London and worked for Tripe & Wakeham Partnership until 1975.
John moved to Vancouver in 1976 and took a position with Howard Yano Architects. He became a Partner with the firm in 1991, eventually renaming it Bingham Hill Architects.
John worked on many projects through his career including institutional, restaurant, hotel, and residential. Some of his notable early projects include the Chief and Petty Officers Mess in Esquimalt, the Prince George Law Courts, the original Rendezvous Lodge at Blackcomb, the Westin Hotel at Whistler, the original renovation of Kitsilano Pool and the original Emily Carr University of Art and Design building in Vancouver.
Through his diverse career, John worked with many of Vancouver’s notable developers on projects that have shaped the fabric of the region, including restorations of The Crane Building, The McMaster Building, and The Hamilton in Yaletown, Framework in Chinatown, Alto and Salt in downtown Vancouver, Pinnacle Living at Capstan Village in Richmond, Destiny on the North Shore, and The Beverly in White Rock.
John was dedicated to his profession, earning a reputation for his ability to conceptualize client aspirations and manage projects with excellence through to completion. He acted as a mentor to many in the industry and will be missed by all who knew him, including his family.
In honour of John, donations made in his memory will directly support Gastrointestinal Cancer research at BC Cancer.
