80 Minutes to Ruck Cancer
In memory of Sue Pierce, and to the many rugby supporters who have lost their lives to Cancer.
Event History
The 80 Minutes to Ruck Cancer run was founded in 2018 by Vernon, B.C. native and Canadian international Cameron Pierce along with members of the CORE community. In its first year, 80 Minutes raised over $11,000 toward BC Cancer — Kelowna. In 2019, it officially became an annual event with the hopes of branching out to other rugby communities within B.C. in the years to come. This year, the run returns to continue bringing cancer awareness to the rugby community as well as raise funds toward BC Cancer — Kelowna.
Who is Sue Pierce?
Sue Pierce was a wife, a mom, an aunty, a grandma, a sister, a friend, and an avid rugby supporter. She cheered her son on from the Okanagan to Provincial, International and Professional clubs in France. Sue was a nurse in Vernon who had a passion for travelling, nature, her family and friends. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017, where she received treatments in both Vernon and Kelowna. Unfortunately, by 2020, the cancer had spread to her brain and she continued with treatment in both Port Alberni and Victoria. Although she never played rugby, she was one of the toughest ladies around, having undergone numerous lung and brain surgeries. She even overcame COVID in late 2020 on one of her European travels. Like so many, the cancer took over and she eventually passed away on April 6, 2021. This fundraiser is dedicated to the warriors who have fought for their lives off the field in an uphill battle against cancer.
