Amy's Living Legacy In-Memory Fundraising Page

Fundraising Goal: $250,000

Amy MacRae was diagnosed in 2017 with stage 2 low-grade serous ovarian cancer at 32 years old. Amy was so much more than her cancer. She was a trained Kindergarten and behaviour special needs teacher. A daughter and sister. Wife of ten years to her husband Garreth. And most of all mom to her beautiful daughter Evie.

She did everything she could to have more time with her much loved daughter Evie, husband Garreth, her family and friends - including several types of targeted therapy, chemotherapy, and multiple long and difficult surgeries. If love and will power were enough, Amy would still be here.

Despite the burden of her diagnosis, Amy continued to be loving, kind and compassionate. In 2019 Amy visited the BC Cancer low-grade serous laboratory to learn more about their efforts to improve the survival rates of women with her cancer. She wanted to support their efforts to help women have more time.

In her last days she requested this page be set up to honour her memory. Amy passed away peacefully on June 1, 2020.

Donations and fundraisers, now and in the future, can be made in Amy’s name to support the efforts of Canadian researchers.

“This cancer has taken from me more than I ever could have imagined. But it has also made me more grateful than I ever have been for the simple things. Outcomes for this disastrous disease haven’t improved in over 50 years. We need to demand new research and more funding, on par with the resources available to help my sisters with breast cancer. I am grateful for every day I have here and I encourage you to help me change the outcomes for future women with this disease.”

“Hug someone you love really tight, eat your favourite food just because you can, sprint down your street and yell at the top of your lungs. We take so much of this beautiful life for granted.”

The Amy Award Anthology
Paperback - April 20, 2022

The short memoirs in this anthology are the inaugural finalists of what has become known, affectionately, as The Amy Award. The pieces represent a range of styles: a lyric essay; a travel chronicle; a letter to a younger self; a portrait of a forgotten relative; tales of childhood, coming of age, family tensions and surrenders; vignettes of caring for aging parents; and a sketch of powerlessness and love during the pandemic.

While they vary in subject and form, these essays all contain the common pulse of grounding, resonant love. In the words of award-winning memoirist, Anne Bokma, the judge of this year's contest: "Each of these short memoir pieces is a unique jewel that illuminates some aspect of our human experience."

The International Amy MacRae Award for Memoir was created in celebration of the life of Amy MacRae and in support of her legacy to improve the outcomes of women with ovarian cancer.

All proceeds from this book are donated to Amy's Living Legacy in support of ovarian cancer research.
